It was originally the name of a grove of olive trees just outside Athens. The land was associated with a legendary hero named Akademos. Around 387 BC, Plato began teaching there. He created a community centered on:
We believe each child has unique gifts and purpose, and we guide them in the cultivation of those gifts.
We respect the capacity of each child to engage meaningfully with the world around them.
Unstructured outdoor time plays a magical role in forming the deep roots our community is known for.
Each day starts with an opportunity to warm hearts and stretch minds. We connect with each other through heart subjects, like music, art, stories, and poetry, before we do anything else. Students share the things that have surprised, delighted, or puzzled them throughout the week, and they lead discussions about topics that are important to them.
Rain or shine, we play outside. We move our bodies, deepen our relationships, and let nature fill our souls every single day.
Nearly every moment at Blue Moose is collaborative. Study Hall offers an opportunity to have a bit of stillness as students progress in core subjects.
Students have a real voice in what fills their day. Classes are voted on, shaped by genuine curiosity, and built around the idea that fascination is the best teacher we have ever met.
Hands-on group lessons offer a wide and nourishing feast of subjects. Each week, an hour is set aside for experiences led by mentors from our broader community to learn about a variety of potential interests: from rock climbing to magic tricks to fire building to partner dancing.
Three core classes each day, chosen each year based on student goals and interests. Classes typically rotate between these fields of study: music, art, life skills and leadership, PE, science, project management, history, and language arts.
Living books, narration, and the formation of habits. Charlotte Mason believed children deserve a rich and generous education, and so do we.
Independence, hands-on discovery, and deep respect for the child. We trust children to do real work, make real choices, and learn from both.
Rooted in heart subjects, goodness, and deep connection. Learning is a formation of the whole person.
Creativity, problem-solving, and real-world application. Children learn best when they are building, making, and doing something that matters.
Drop us a line. We read every message ourselves.
We'll get back to you within a couple of days.
